A group of tricycle drivers yesterday said that although rice smuggling is against the law, it helps them in feeding their families as smuggled rice is sold cheaper than the regular and taxed rice.

In an interview, five drivers yesterday said they earn P100 to P200 a day and it is hard for them to feed their family buying rice at regular price.

They said that they have been patronizing smuggled rice sold in some barangay stores and they are cheaper than the taxed rice.

The reaction from ordinary people came in the wake of the series of apprehensions by authorities of smuggled rice.

Based on records, police have confiscated and apprehended several illegal shipments of smuggled rice that came from outside the country.

A government agency that apprehends smuggled rice turns it over to the Bureau of Custom for proper disposition.

The Bureau of Custom is strictly campaigning against rice smuggling because the people behind it do not remit duties to  the bureau. – Dan Toribio Jr.
