Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday stressed that the fire at the Dacon Lumberyard in Recodo Friday night was purely accidental and not caused by rebel attack or lawlessness as assumed by some sectors.

Mayor Climaco cited first hand reports from Assistant City Administrator Dr. Elmeir Apolinario, who rushed to the fire scene after learning of the incident as well as reports from fire probers from the City Fire District.

The incident occurred shortly before 11 p.m. Friday and stretched through Saturday morning. Nevertheless, the fire was contained and confined to the yard premises and did not pose risks to the community.

No casualties were reported but estimated damage to property could reach over P50 million, according to fire probers.

Initial investigation showed that the fire broke out when two Dacon workers were withdrawing gasoline from a storage tank located between the stockpile of lumber and the machine shop. To light up the area, the workers used cigarette lighter as they could not find a flashlight, however the lighter flames caught the gasoline that sparked the blaze.

Mayor Climaco thanked the Zamboanga City Water District and all those who provided water and assistance including District I Cong. Celso Lobregat and Zamcelco Director Rudy Lim and Dr. Apolinario who rushed to the scene to help contain the situation.

She likewise advised all companies and all business establishments to practice fire safety procedures to avoid accidents.

Meanwhile, loose talks alleged that the fire incident in Dacon was caused by an attack by lawless elements.

Apolinario said there is no truth to the rumors and that the fire was accidental and was aggravated by flammable materials in the area and the excessively dry season. — Sheila Covarrubias
