Mayor Celso Lobregat the other day cited Zamboanguena weightlifter, Hidilyn Diaz, silver medalist in the recently concluded International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Grand Prix held in Fujian, China, as he thanked her for continuously bringing honor and fame to Zamboanga City.

Lobregat at the same time handed over to Diaz, the P40,000 cash incentive that the city government grants to silver medalists in international competitions as mandated under a city ordinance. Cash incentives are awarded to athletes in honor and appreciation of their feats in local and international competitions.

Diaz, who won numerous medals in previous international competitions the past years, paid a courtesy visit on Mayor Lobregat at City Hall Thursday, March 31where she presented to the chief executive the silver medal she won during the competition in China held from January 15-17.

The Grand Prix is participated solely by weightlifters specifically invited by the International Weightlifters Federation (IWF).  It is the first of two Olympic qualifying competitions held to determine a weightlifter’s chances of competing at the 2012 London Olympics.

Weightlifting coach Antonio Agustin who accompanied Diaz during the courtesy call revealed Diaz’ plan to compete in the second and final qualifying rounds in France later this year.

In an interview, Diaz shared she would continue to train to improve her weightlifting. She is set to leave on April 10 to train in Manila and later to compete at the World Junior Championship in Penang, Malaysia from June 30 to July 7.

Mayor Lobregat said Diaz is an example of a hardworking and committed athlete, who continuously hones her craft to attain her goals. “She brings honor and pride to Zamboanga and we are very grateful for that”. — Claudine Uniana/City Hall PIO
