The local government will lead the city’s observance of Dia di Ma’am Caling, a celebration of the birth anniversary of the city’s first woman mayor.

The commemoration will kick off with a mass at the Holy Trinity Parish in Pasonanca at 4PM after which a wreath-laying ceremony and commemorative program will follow at Jardin Maria Clara Lobregat.

The highlight of the observance is the conferment of the Mayor Maria Clara Lorenzo Lobregat Award of Excellence.

The late mayor, who Zamboanguenos know as Ma’am Caling, was the first woman elected as local chief executive of the city. Born in 1921, she is the second daughter of Don Pablo Lorenzo, who himself also served as city mayor, and Luisa Rafols of Cebu.

Ma’am Caling’s political career started in 1971 when she was elected as the city’s delegate to the Constitutional Convention. In 1987, she was elected to a congressional seat, an opportunity for her to demonstrate her leadership. Impressed with her performance at the House of Representatives, the people re-elected her in 1992 and 1995.

After her three terms in congress, she ran for and won the mayoral post.
