Zamboanga Peninsula bested 16 other regional contestants emerging as National Champion in the Essay Writing Contest Category of the 2014 National Festival of Talents held in Olongapo City last April 9, 2014.

Mary Nove Patangan coached by Miss Elisa Elnas Vidal of Dipolog City National High School bagged the national champion spot among 16 other contestants coming from the different regions of the country as Region 3 and Region 12 placed second and third, respectively in this category.

The National Festival of Talents (NFOT) is a yearly competition of skills and talents focusing in four categories namely: Essay Writing, Poster Making, Jingle Writing/Singing, and Population Quiz (POPQUIZ) which are held simultaneously. Conducted by the Department of Education (DepEd) in collaboration with the Commission on Population (PopCom), this year’s Festival of Talents, adopting the theme: “Filipino Youth and the World: Emerging Issues and Challenges” was held at the Columban College in Olongapo City where the region of Zamboanga Peninsula and the 15 other regions of the country fielded participants in all of its categories.

The main highlight among the NFOT events is the National Population Quiz (POPQUIZ). This activity aims to promote awareness and sustain interest on population issues among high school students and the general public. It also serves as a venue to convey population and development concepts and information such as responsible parenthood, adolescent health and development, gender and development, issues on population and poverty, environment, resources and sustainable development for the in-school youth.  POPQUIZ which was started by POPCOM in 1981, is now an institutionalized activity under the Population Education Program (POPED) of the Department of Education. Every year, regional offices of DepEd and POPCOM conduct three level elimination rounds among 3rd and 4th year high school students to choose the regional representative for the national level competition — starting from the School, District, and finally the Regional level elimination round.  Region 9 produced three (3) POPQUIZ national champions, in 1982, 1996 and 2003.  — Maria Rosalinda K.
