The 2014 summer event dubbed “Festival de Verano” kicked off over the weekend with stimulating activities intended to involve the community and provide wholesome entertainment to both local residents and visitors during the sunny season.

Organized by the City Government through the City Tourism Division under the Office of the Mayor, the festival’s opening salvo was the summer experience at Sta. Cruz Island Friday, April 25 with the aim of promoting the island as a prime tourist destination. It will run until May 24.

The festival progressed with the observance of Dia di Ma’am Caling Saturday, April 26 in celebration of the 93rd birth anniversary of the late Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat. The event was highlighted by a mass, wreathlaying and commemorative program at Jardin Maria Clara.

As in the recent summer festivals, this year will also feature Juego de Antes to allow today’s young Zamboanguenos discover and experience the games of past generations. Juego will also give the older generation an opportunity to relive their childhood through the games they once enjoyed.

May 3 will be the Kite flying competition at the Paseo del Mar. Deadline for registration of entries is Wednesday, April 30. The competition is divided into two categories: the Traditional/Flat Kite category and the    Figure Kite category. The traditional/flat kite is a 2D or two-faced kite that comes in any shape while the figure kite is a 3D kite with a theme and comes in realistic shapes.

Participants may register more than one (1) kite to the competition and may choose any material (paper, cloth, or any similar light material such as wood, bamboo, etc. and metal connectors) for his/her entry. Inexpensive materials are also encouraged. Official entries must carry the city government’s seal sticker provided by the organizer.

Aside from the kite fly tilt, other games will also be featured such as kadang-kadang, sack race, tumbahan lata, shatong, limbo, tug of war, Gerry base, domino and tubigan. These will run for three Saturdays  (May 3, 10 and 17). Participants of the first two Juegos will compete with each other in a series of eliminations. On the final Juego day, the winners will go head-to-head to determine the champions.

Meanwhile, Festival de Verano will also be highlighted with the observance of Dia de Vicente S. Alvarez on May 18 as a tribute to the first and only Zamboangueno national  hero Vicente Alvarez. The activity will kick off with a commemorative mass at the Fort Pilar Shrine at 4PM, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at Plaza de Vicente Alvarez and a commemorative program at City Hall Lobby.

The city will hold the 1st Dia de General Vicente S. Alvarez Oratorical Contest on May 9 as part of its advocacy to create awareness, understanding and appreciation of the life of the revolutionary hero of Zamboanga. Application forms may be secured from April 1- 30 at the City Tourism Office in Paseo del Mar. Deadline for the submission of accomplished forms with the copy of the contest piece is not later than 5pm Tuesday, May 6 at the tourism office.

The contest proper will be at 2pm, May 9 at the City Hall lobby.

The summer events will be capped with the Festival de las Bellas y Flores, a parade of lovely belles, gowns and arcs on May 24. The activity will begin with the parade at 5pm from the City Hall grounds to Paseo del Mar followed by a program at 6pm.
