Submission of entries for the 1st Dia de General Vicente Alvarez Oratorical contest will only be until Tuesday, May 6.

Contest proper will be at 2pm, May 9 at the City Hall lobby.

The City Tourism Division under the Office of the City Mayor is organizing the oratorical contest as part of the advocacy to create awareness, understanding and appreciation of the life of the first and only Zamboangueno revolutionary hero Gen. Vicente Alvarez. The event forms part of the Festival de Verano, the erstwhile summer fest that kicked off last week.

The oratorical piece must revolve around the theme “Living the Legacy of General Alvarez”.

Application forms may be secured at the City Tourism Division in Paseo del Mar. Contestants must be below 20 years old as of December 31, 2013 and enrolled as a tertiary student in a government or private institution for school year 2013-2014. A school certification must be submitted to attest enrollment.

The oratorical piece must be original and never been published. It must be typewritten, saved and submitted in a word document format (Times Roman font, size 12), double-spaced, using the Standard English language. It is acceptable to utilize or incorporate a native language (chabacano) in the oratorical piece in order to establish a point but the vast majority must be written/ delivered in English.

Criteria for judging will include the content – 50%; delivery- 35% and decorum/ attire- 15%.

The speech must be logical, correct in form and content, relevant to the theme, and must address the established theme. The speech must clearly document all references or copyrighted material cited in the oration. All supporting documentation must be neatly printed, complete and accurate.

The delivery of the contest piece must not exceed 7 minutes. A one-point deduction for every one minute in excess will be imposed.

The conduct of the contest is part of the activities lined up for the observance of Dia de General Vicente Alvarez set on May 18 at the Plaza Vicente S. Alvarez, to commemorate the victory of the said day against the Spanish colonizers last May 18, 1899.

The City Government has enacted Ordinance 334 naming Plaza Roma situated at the Corner of Don Pablo Lorenzo St., Zaragoza St., and Gen. Alvarez St. as Plaza Vicente S. Alvarez and setting May 18 of every year as Dia de Gen. Vicente S. Alvarez in recognition of his feats. — Sheila Covarrubias
