The Mindanao  regional finals of the Coca-Cola PBA Young Stars kicks off today, May 1, and will continue until May 3, 2014. This is the second year of the tournament in Zamboanga City.

Pedro Alfaro Jr., Federacion Basketbolista Zamboanga (FBZ) president and Basketball Association of the Philippines-Samahang Basketbolista ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) Arear Head, said delegates from Davao and Cagayan de Oro Cities will compete with the Zamboanga team in the three-day cage extravaganza to be held at the Zamboanga City Coliseum.

The Coca-Cola PBA Young Stars is a tournament aims to promote discipline and baskeball basic skills for the grass root level. This is the second time that this tournament is held in Zamboanga. And we are fortunate enough to be chosen as the host for its Mindanao regional finals. Each team shall be composed of players from thirteen (13) to sixteen (16) years old.

Alfaro said the players of the Zamboanga team were chosen afte the local level tournament held April 20-30, 2014. It was preceded by the try-out held on March 29-30

The tournament’s age categories are:

13 years old (Born on year 2001)

14 years old (Born on year 2000)

15 years old (Born on year 1999)

16 years old (Born on year 1998)

Each player must be an actual resident of the city or municipality he is representing for at least a year.

Whoever wins will be representing the region on the national finals on May 18-25, 2014 in Manila.

Alfaro said this is one tournament with direction participation of the country’s pro basketball league the PBA.

It is a tournament for young basketeers who will have an avenue for them to play in during the summer months, the SBP Area head added.
