Abu nabbed downtown amid alert status in ZC PDF Print E-mail

Government forces arrested an alleged member of the Abu Sayyaf Group along Mercado St. downtown Zamboanga City last Saturday afternoon.

Nabbed was Alias Abu Kim, who has pending warrant of arrest for kidnapping.

The arrest came as the city was on :Level 3 alert following intelligence reports of threats from terror groups.

The alert status was observed since last week as heavily armed soldiers of the Task Force Zamboanga and police troopers are deployed and scattered in the city proper.

Under heavy guard is City Hall where a firetruck is on standby for any eventuality. Soldiers are also posted on shopping centers and other vital installations.

City Hall in a public advisory however gave assurance that the police, military and civilian gov’t “are on top of the situation and will do everything possible to ensure the welfare of the constituents.”

“Let us remain vigilant but calm and voluntarily share info regarding suspicious activities, baggage or personalities in your area. Refrain from forwardng unverified text messages. Call 166 or 117 for security concerns,” the advisory said.

City Hall said the supposed rally of the Mindanao Alliance for Peace (MAP) at Plaza Pershing from 8am-3pm yesterday was cancelled by the city government based on recommendations of the police and the military “for the interest of the majority of the Zamboangueños”

. “The deployment of police and military forces in strategic areas downtown and the outlying barangays is part of the pre-emptive security measures to safeguard the city and the people,” according to City Hall.

DZT gathered that the arrested ASG man was charged with six counts of kidnapping in connection with the kidnapping of six members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses sometime in August 2002 in Patikul,

The warrant was issued by Judge Toribio E. ILao Jr. of the National Capital Region’s Regional Trial Court Branch 266, Pasig City for the crime of Kidnapping and Serious Illegal Detention with Ransom docketed under criminal case number 128923-H A to E.

Abu Kim was arrested by men of the RID 9, RIU 9, ZCPO, RCIDU 9, Task Force Zamboanga around 5 p.m. He was disguised in security guard uniform.

Abu Kim was brought to the RIU 9 Office in Camp Batalla for documentation and proper disposition as well as tactical interrogation.

Authorities were still trying to determine the purpose of Abu Kim’s presence  in the city.

Lawmen were not discounting that Abu Kim was sent by the group to conduct surveillance preparatory to the staging of terror attacks. —  Dan Toribio Jr.
