To boost the morale of Zamboanga athletes participating in the 2014 Palarong Pambansa, Mayor Beng Climaco personally led the delegation during the game’s opening program in Sta. Cruz, Laguna, Monday.

“I think this is the first time that the delegation will be represented by the mayor and it is important that we give our whole-hearted support to the children,” Mayor Climaco said during a press conference at City Hall on Sunday.

The city delegation included elementary and secondary students together with their coaches and chaperones.

Mayor Climaco expressed admiration to the resiliency showed by Zamboangueño athletes after the siege. Even though the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex has been declared not operational as it is being used by internally displaced persons, local athletes are able to find ways to practice by searching for a different venue.

According to Department of Education’s (DepEd) website, the 2014 Palarong Pambansa will showcase a novel event as Olympic Wrestling makes its debut this year. Demonstration sports such as Wushu which was unveiled in the 2013 Palaro for Secondary boys and girls and Billiards for Secondary boys will also return this year.

Palarong Pambansa is a national event done annually which involves student-athletes from private and public schools from 17 regions of the Philippines. This occasion is facilitated by DepEd.

This year, Laguna hosted the Palarong Pambansa and this is their first time to spearhead the multi-sporting event.

“I encourage the Zamboangueño Community— Christians, Muslims, Lumads and our people in Region 9, let us pray for the success of the Zamboanga City Delegation so that the children will realize that with their presence there— they are already engaged champions,” Mayor Climaco ended. — Francis Sadaya
