Advocates of a third legislative district in Zamboanga City said yesterday that they will bring the issue directly to the people.

“Since the majority members of the City Council and Mayor Celso Lobregat can not be convinced to support the creation of the 3rd district, we will bring the matter directly to the people,” said Councilor Rommel Agan.

Agan, along with Councilors Mel Sadain, Cesar Jimenez Jr., former councilors Kim Elago and Al-Jihan Rebollos Edding and former vice mayor Mannix Dalipe said in a press conference that they will hold their own symposium in the different schools, groups and later in the different barangays to explain to the people what the creation of a 3rd legislative district can bring to the people and the city.
“We will do this not for our own interest but for the interest of the people of Zamboanga. As officials, we are supposed to represent the interest of the people and not of someone or the party,”  said Councilor Sadain.

Former vice mayor Mannix Dalipe challenged all those who publicly manifested their opposition to the creation of a 3rd district to be specific with their reasons rather than say that there is an “unknown fear”

“I challenge them to show something that would justify their opposition in the manner we are telling the people that the creation would bring many positive things to the people and the city,” Dalipe said, adding that the “unknown fear that they are saying are pure alibis”

They vehemently deny that they are working for the creation of the 3rd district to pave the way for the entry of former Zamboanga Del Norte Congressman and convicted child rapist Romeo Jalosjos in the city’s politics.

“We are not pushing for the creation of the 3rd or 4th district for the Jalosjos. We are doing this for the people of Zamboanga,” Councilor Cesar Jimenez Jr. said

The local opposition has been reported earlier to have allied with the Jalosjos following their meeting with the latter in Dapitan.

The group also challenged District 2 Congressman Erbie A. Fabian and District 1 Congresswoman Beng Climaco to file the bill in Congress creating the 3rd district.

“They should not make the endorsement of the City Council as an excuse” former councilor Kim Elago said.

The group challenged those who are opposed to the creation of the 3rd district to a public debate so the people will once and for all be enlightened.

They said after they are through with their efforts in making the people truly understand what the additional district can bring to the people and the city, they will leave it  to the people to compel the officials who are opposed to support the move.

“Remember, many leaders already fell due to pressures from the people,” Elago said. — AP
