Preparations are now underway for the observance of Dia di General Vicente Alvarez, the only Zamboangueno revolutionary hero, whose gallantry led to the surrender of Spanish soldiers in 1899.

Forming part of the Festival de Verano formerly the summer festival, the Dia di General Vicente Alvarez is set on Sunday, May 18. The simple yet meaningful commemoration will kick off with a mass at 3:45pm at the Fort Pilar shrine followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at 4:45pm at the Plaza de Vicente Alvarez (in front of Rizal Park). A brief program will follow at 5pm at the City Hall lobby.

Highlight of the commemorative program will be the presentation of oratorical pieces on the life of the Zamboangueno hero, by college students.

The observance of Dia di General Vicente Alvarez is pursuant to City Ordinance

334 naming Plaza Roma situated at the Corner of Don Pablo Lorenzo St., Zaragoza St., and Gen. Alvarez St. as Plaza Vicente S. Alvarez and setting May 18 of every year as Dia de Gen. Vicente S. Alvarez in recognition of his feats.

The observance is intended to drum up awareness on the contributions and the heroism of Alvarez.

Displeased by the brutalities committed against the Filipino people particularly in the city of Zamboanga, Gen. Vicente and his men realized the need for all Filipinos to join the fight for our sovereignty. On May 18, 1899, after fierce fighting, Fort Pilar – the seat of the Spanish government in Zamboanga – fell and the Spanish forces led by Governor-General Diego delos Rios surrendered to Gen. Alvarez.

Mayor Beng Climaco will lead city officials and employees during the tribute which will also be attended by representatives from national government agencies, military and police personnel, representatives from academic institutions as well as members of the Alvarez clan. — SEC/CMU
