A barangay chairman was hacked and shot to death by seven unidentified persons while he was on his way to attend a Liga ng mga Barangay meeting in Barangay Mitokong, Zamboanga del Sur, last Wednesday morning.

Vicente Labor succumbed to multiple hack wounds on his face and gunshot wounds on the different parts of his body.

A police report said Labor was walking alone on his way to the Dumalinao Municipal Building about 6 a.m. to attend a meeting of the Liga ng mga Barangay when armed men blocked his path and attacked him.

Residents in the area said they saw the gunmen shot Labor before others hacked him repeatedly then fled towards unknown direction.

Labor died on the spot due to severe hack and bullet wounds.
Investigators believe the killing had something to do with Labor’s work but they are still clueless on the killers’ identities.

Meanwhile, two barangay chairmen were arrested by the police at a checkpoint for illegal possession of firearms in Kabasalan Zamboanga del sur, last Wednesday morning.

Arrested were Antonio Talavera, 38, chairman of Barangay Balugo and Apolinario Taccuning, 49, of Barangay Talaptap, both in Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay.

A police report disclosed that the Kabasalan police put up a checkpoint in Calapan, Kabasalan about 10 a.m. when they chanced upon Talavera carrying a .9mm pistol without pertinent papers.
Taccuning was intercepted at another checkpoint about 11a.m. by the same police team.
Seized from his possession was 9mm pistol loaded with ammunition.
