For convenience and excellence in the service of its 2,601-strong members and counting, the Samboangan Bayanihan Cooperative (SBC) unveiled its newly constructed two-storey building worth P10 million at Sevilla St. corner Claveria St, this city yesterday morning.

The imposing edifice featuring a modern Spanish architecture stands on Bayanihan’s own 484-sq.m property worth P8.5 million. The new building was acquired through a loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines while the lot was bought by the cooperative itself.

Founded on July 4, 1973 by then Constitutional Convention (Concon) Delegate Teodoro C. Araneta, the SBC has grown from a humble beginning 40 years ago to become one of the city’s financially stable cooperatives at present.

Honesty is the benchmark of SBC’s dramatic growth with the present officers and those who came before them served the cooperative with utmost honesty and perseverance.

At 40, SBC boasts of total assets at P72,031,217.57 and a net surplus of P41,004,381.19 as of December 31, 2013.

True to its mission, the SBC has developed into a service oriented, committed, dynamic, democratic, socially and financially sustainable Bayanihan cooperative. It holds firm to its mission of adhering to an effective governance and financially disciplined cooperative through sustainable social services, values formation of officers, staff and members.

In a bid to carry out and sustain the momentum of its growth as a cooperative, the SBC has adopted a five-year development plan (2014-2018) designed to capture sustainable growth in all areas of the coop’s operation.

And to steer the SBC into a new era of cooperativism are the present officers, namely; Ronald A. Vicete, chairman of the Board of Directors; Cesar Y. Mandin, vice chairman; Magdalena A. Perez, Milavel D. Nazario, Magdalena Y. Lim, Cristino V. Bancayrin and Teodulo Adora as members of the BOD.

The other officers are Louella T. Camis, secretary; Sally Bahoy, manager; Blandie Sulaiman, cashier; Arsenia Gervacio, bookkeeper; Miriamel Bagtasos, posting clerk; Jimmy Babor, collector, and Zenaida Buhayan, Vitali clerk.

Present during yesterday’s blessing and inauguration rites were Councilors Myra Paz Valderroza-Abubakar, chairperson of the City Council’s Committee on Cooperatives, and Elong Natividad together with the SBC officers, and personnel headed by Vicete.

To recall, the SBC conducted its 40th Annual General Assembly last Feb. 23 at the Astoria Plaza of the Grand Astoria Hotel. The event was anchored on the theme “SBC: SolusyonnaTiempo de Necesidad.”

In his message, Vicete stressed that the theme aptly captured the very raison d’etre(reason for existence) of the cooperative, which is the prime moving force “why we converge and in solidarity bind ourselves to the core values of cooperativism.”

“Our cooperative is continually innovating practical mechanisms consistent with our policies and guidelines in finding solutions to the growing needs of our members,”Vicete declared.— Vic Larato
