The Alvarez family was in full force last Sunday, May 18 when the City Government laid out a simple yet meaningful commemoration activity for revolutionary hero Gen. Vicente S. Alvarez.

Georgin Alvarez-de los Reyes, one of the great grand daughters of Gen. Alvarez, expressed profuse thanks to the City Government especially Mayor Beng Climaco for feting their kin and for remembering his deeds and contributions to the city and country.

“On behalf of the Alvarez clan, we express our gratitude to the city for this memorable commemoration. May the heroism and valor that Gen. Alvarez and his men have shown will inspire us Zamboangueños to work together for unity, peace and progress in our beautiful city of Zamboanga,” Mrs. De los Reyes said.

Dubbed as “Dia di Gen. Vicente S. Alvarez”, the commemoration kicked off with a wreathlaying ceremony at Plaza Vicente Alvarez (former Plaza Roma) followed by a program at the City Hall lobby which was highlighted by oratorical presentations by two college students. The activity was capped by a mass at the Fort Pilar Shrine.

Mayor Beng Climaco herself led Zamboangueños in the commemoration activity which was also graced by Councilors Josephine Pareja, Luis Biel III and Roel Natividad, City Department heads led by City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr., various police and military units, regional agencies, academe and other non-government organizations and stakeholders.

The observance of Dia di Gen. Vicente Alvarez, now on its 6th year, is based on Ordinance 334.

For her part, Mayor Climaco hailed Gen. Alvarez as an epitome of a Zamboangueño who has the courage and the heart to defend the people under the conviction of one city, one nation, one Republic of the Philippines.

“As we confront challenges, hopefully the memory of our hero will give us the4 courage because all the 98 barangays will stay united as we belong to one Republic of the Philippines under one flag, one nation,” the mayor added.

Two college students- Eunice Canoy of Western Mindanao State University and Rovic John Eslao of Ateneo de Zamboanga University made oratorical presentations on the theme “Living  the legacy of Gen. Vicente Alvarez”.

The City Government presented the two students as well as their trainers with plaques of appreciation for their brilliant presentations of the life and works of Gen. Alvarez in declamatory form. — Sheila Covarrubias
