Mayor Beng Climaco has expressed her deepest respect and appreciation for the barangay health workers even as she commended them for their critical role as communicators, advocates, care providers and as agents of change and community leaders.

“At a time when our public health system is in dire need, you are the glue that keeps our health teams in the barangays together. You are our every man, able to perform any task, and any job, at the snap of a finger,” Mayor Climaco said of the barangay health workers during the Regional BHWs Summit at the Grand Astoria Hotel yesterday morning.

She said it is a sad reality to know that there are still communities that have no professional health practitioners, “but we are profoundly grateful that we have our barangay health workers to help both local and national government make good on its promise to deliver vital health services to where it is needed most.”

“You are also teachers for the next generation. Nothing beats experience and in this hall, we have barangay health workers who have devoted years, even decades of service, and have a wealth of knowledge to share. You are the link to our people, the one who gives our health services its human touch in the times when it gets too clinical or too detached,” said the lady chief executive, whose administration has identified health as one of its priorities.

She said the city government of Zamboanga will always stand for all the health workers and if there is anything that “we can do to make health services more accessible, more extensive, and more far-reaching, you can be assured that we will do it.”

Anchored on the theme “Barangay Health Workers as Frontliners in Pursuit of Kalusugan Pangkalahatan,” the whole day summit was organized by the Department of Health regional office 9 headed by Regional Director Nimfa Torrizo.

Present were barangay health workers from the provinces of Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Sibugay and the cities of Zamboanga, Isabela, Pagadian, Dipolog and Dapitan.— Vic Larato
