Mayor Beng Climaco highly commends the local police for their aggressive efforts to avert security threats with the recent recovery of unexploded ordnances and improvised explosive devices (IED).

Police authorities Thursday (May 22) recovered two 60mm projectile mortars in a secluded area in Barangay San Roque in a follow-up operation following the arrest of two suspected lawless elements in the area recently.

The recovery of the IED was based on information extracted from arrested suspect Nujir Ahidji, who, together with Ustadz Hassan was arrested May 13 by virtue of a search warrant issued by the Regional Trial Court. The timely response of the authorities averted possible threats to the city’s security.

Mayor Climaco said the resolve of the police to ensure peace and security in Zamboanga is demonstrated in their daily accomplishments which most often remain unnoticed.

She encouraged police authorities under the leadership of PSSupt. Angelito Casimiro to continue demonstrating their resolve and capacity to effectively protect the city and its residents from lawlessness.

She likewise called on the citizens to continuously support the police and military by reporting to the police about suspicious, unattended bags or items or suspicious activities in their area. “Through our vigilance we can all pro-actively secure Zamboanga City”.

The police last May 11 also recovered one round 76mm projectile with defaced markings in an area in Upper Cabatangan. Last May 7, an empty 10mm projectile was also discovered under the bridge in Barangay Sinunuc.

Aside from systematic deployment of police personnel in strategic locations, the local police also conduct spot panelling/sanitation operations in vital installations and places of convergence. — Sheila Covarrubias
