Festival de Verano draws to a close today with the parade of Bellas y Flores featuring a bevy of beautiful ladies with their exquisite mascotas and artistic arcos.

The whole stretch of Valderosa Street leading to Paseo del Mar will be the center of activities which is a contest of creativity, beauty and artistic ingenuity. 13 gown designers, 10 señoritas and 9 arco designers will participate in the contest for best gown, prettiest señorita and most outstanding arco respectively.

The parade will kick off at 5pm starting at Valderosa St. (fronting City Hall) towards Paseo del Mar where the program and announcement of winners will be held.

Now on its 12th year, the 3-component competition spells out the uniqueness of Zamboanga’s adaptation of the traditional Flores de Mayo while serving as an avenue for professional and up-and-coming local couturiers.

For this year, the contestants are Bryan Cabadu, Erich Miñoza, Clodualdo Rico, Vince Descalzo, Zjhay Taupan, Zenaida Tarro-Descalzo, Harold John Ruste Bernado, Friada Usman, Shads Arula, Gerry BD. Carpio, Monching Fernandez, Elmer Julian and Neri Jaruda.

Each designer must have a señorita to serve as model for their creation. These models will also be judged according to criteria and one of them will be crowned as the Prettiest Señorita. The participants are Angelu Macapili, Kellie Dionne Camorro, Giselle Alvarez, Maria Andrea de Guzman, Kriza Ramos, Tonimarie Perez, Myra Nathalie Pangilinan, Rovee Jewel  Tan, Elle Ibrahim and Avril Chaze Estrada.

On the other hand, participants to the Most Outstanding Arco competition are Rey Mascardo, EMC Team, Clodualdo Rico, Zjhay Taupam, Florabel Mambuay, Floriao/Alvin Reyes, Melika Boutique, Erika Basco (Cut & Culture Salon) and Ropa Gowns and Events.

The Festival delas Bellas y Flores is the concluding event of the 2014 Festival de Verano, erstwhile Summer Festival which the City Government of Zamboanga had dynamically been organizing for over a decade now.

Other activities included the Kite flying competition, Juego de Antes, Summer Escapade at Sta. Cruz Island including the Dia di Mam Caling celebrating the birth anniversary of the late Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat last April 26 and Dia di Gen. Vicente Alvarez celebrating the heroism of revolutionary hero of 1899 Gen. Vicente S. Alvarez last May 18. — Sheila Covarrubias
