Zamboanga Peninsula’s delegation to the 63rd Farm Youth (4-H) National Congress held in General Santos City from May 26-28 landed in fourth place out of the 17 participating regions.

Very promising though is the fact that the Zamboanga City participants won the most number of medals in the different competitions held during the 3-day congress.

As this developed, Mayor Beng Climaco expressed appreciation and commended the young Zamboangueño farmers for bringing pride and honor to Zamboanga. She urged them to continue on shining and to encourage their fellow young farmers to also be innovative and dynamic in the use of farm technologies or methods.

Zamboanga’s Riza Earl Angeles of 4H-Mampang (not Talon-talon as earlier reported), won the national championship in the Quiz Bee competition  held during the first day of the activity.

The city’s representative to the Pansit de saging innovation- Arnel Solis of Vitali also bagged the second place while Reymark Marcos of Culianan landed fifth place in the handicraft-making contest with his entry “Boni Lights”.

Aside from trophies, the winners also received cash prizes for their outstanding efforts.

Out of the 39 total participants from Zamboanga Peninsula, 9 are from Zamboanga City. The group was accompanied by City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat and  Lorna Bautista, City 4H Coordinator.

Palacat, along with Bautista accompanied the Zamboanga winners – Angeles, Solis and Marcos to City Hall yesterday to pay a courtesy visit to Mayor Climaco where they also showed their trophies and winning entries. —Sheila Covarrubias
