Mayor Beng Climaco yesterday urged the city’s barangay officials to remain firm and steadfast to the mandate that the people have bestowed upon them and together “let us continue to serve with fervor”.

Speaking at the barangay forum organized by Councilor Gerry Perez in coordination with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG-City Office) at the Zamboanga Ecozone, Mayor Climaco said after the humanitarian crisis brought about by the siege it is now crucial to answer the question of where “we want to go as a city after all that has happened”.

She said the call now is to help build back a better Zamboanga City and realize the vision of the people anchored on her administration’s priority leadership areas of security, health and education.

“We always believe that central to the process of realizing our goals is to empower our people, especially the barangay leaders and move forward together as one,” the lady chief executive stressed, adding that she wants the barangay chairpersons to be the first responders to any crisis in their barangays.

This strategy, she said, was applied during the Zamboanga siege when organized the crisis management command center with City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr. as the head, reporting to her the coordination with other agencies concerned and actions taken or yet to be taken.

Climaco explained that stakeholder empowerment is based on the understanding that you get more realistic and relevant results if you invest greater trust and grant greater authority to stakeholders. “Policies and programs that meet the public’s needs can be most effectively and responsively achieved through collaborative process.”

At the same time, she urged the barangay officials to encourage their constituents to help support the programs of the city government, remain confident and vigilant in their communities and localities.— Vic Larato
