Councilor Vincent Paul A. Elago District 2 has committed to the assembled IP leaders for the creation of the Office of Culture and the Arts during the latter’s ratification of the resolution of the Enhanced Zamboanga City Guidelines on the selection of Indigenous Peoples Mandatory Representative to the City Council  held at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University, this city according to Prof. Ali T. Yacub, Al-Hj, Convener of the Indigenous Peoples Council of Leaders.

“I look forward that our city officials manifest in concrete terms even without the presence of the Indigenous Peoples Representative in the City Council by establishing/creating already the office of culture and the arts,” Elago said. This office, Yacub said, will be the “guardian and repository” of the culture of the IPs of the city and other cultural heritage of the city.

Yacub asked Councilors Myra Paz V. Abubakar and VP Elago to be the stewards of this proposal and to push for the enactment of an ordinance for the creation of the said office.

Furthermore, he hopes that Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco- Salazar will certify as “urgent” the proposed ordinance to be authored by the two legislators.

In a related development, Mayor Beng Climaco informed Prof. Yacub during the City Development Council meeting last May 4, 2014 at Centro Latino, that the proposed Office of Culture and the Arts, will be included in next year’s Budget,

Engr. Rodrigo Sicat, city planning and development officer,  made similar assurance for the inclusion in the budget of the future Office of Culture and the Arts.

Councilor VP Elago, the only City Councilor present during that occasion, took the challenge heartily and committed to the assembled IP leaders for the passage of an ordinance during the sessions of the Sangguniang Panlungsod very soon for which he was given a thunderous applause. — GCCPBA-Media Group
