The City Government organizes the conduct of Concurso de Banda, a battle of local bands on June 23, in celebration of Dia de Fundacion de Chabacano.

The contest, set to be held at 7pm on June 23 at the Paseo del Mar has a three-pronged objective: promote chabacano dialect through a musical competition, provide an avenue of exposures for local amateur bands for the enhancement of their talents and to showcase the best amateur bands in the city with their original chabacano compositions.

Registration forms are available at the City Tourism Office at Paseo del Mar. The accomplished registration form and the copy of the original chabacano song composition with lyrics and chords must be submitted to the City Tourism Office on or before June 18, 2014.   The competition is open to all male and female band members and only original chabacano songs will be allowed to join as entries for the contest.

Prizes at stake are P10,000 for the champion, P7,000 for the second place, P5,000 for the third place and P2,000 consolation prize.

Criteria for judging include musicality- 60%, technique and accuracy- 30% and stage presence and audience impact- 10%. There will be 3 judges set for the competition. The decision of the judges will be final and binding to all participants.

The contest is open to all bands with a maximum of 5 members. It is a first come first serve basis registration.

Interested groups must prepare one cover song of their choice followed by their original composition. The cover song must be within the acceptable genre ranging from alternative, R&B, reggae to pop and it should be in chabacano lyrics.

Interested group must prepare and submit an ORIGINAL CHABACANO song composition with lyrics and chords. No hard rock composition will be accepted. The lyrics of the composition must not contain vulgar or obscene or anything derogatory to the local culture and sensitivity and must adhere to the theme “Chabacano: The Official Language of Zamboanga City.”

Also included in the guidelines are the following: the composition must have not been previously aired / used in other activities in any local circuits in and out of Zamboanga City; the performance time for both cover song and original composition must not exceed 7 minutes which includes the intro, adlib and extro. One minute in excess of the prescribed time will mean a 5-point deduction from the total score.

The drum set will be provided by the organizer and the basic gadgets needed by the band such as guitars, amplifiers and other cords shall be made available by the band themselves and no group will be allowed to change songs for both cover and original composition during the day of the event.

A general meeting will be called on June 20, 2014 for the final briefing and clarifications at City Tourism Office, Paseo del Mar, 3:00 PM. A representative/ representatives of each participating band is required to attend the meeting.— Sheila Covarrubias
