An Abu Sayyaf militant wanted for a string of criminalities was captured on Wednesday off Sta. Cruz Island last Wednesday afternoon.

Western Mindanao Command spokesperson Lt. Col. Randolf Cabangbang identified the arrested fugitive as Mohammad Gaddung. He was intercepted by government troops around 2 p.m. near Coco and Great Sta. Cruz Islands.

Cabangbang said that Gaddung had been wanted by the law after he escaped from detention in Basilan last December 13, 2009.

He said that Gaddung has a P500,000 reward on his head.

Gaddung was taken by the military camp for tactical interrogation pending his turnover to the court.
On July 2007, at least 16 hardened criminals, including four Abu Sayyaf militants, escaped from the Basilan prison after destroying the windows in their cell. And in April 2004, at least 53 of the more than 130 prisoners at the provincial jail, including 19 militant, also escaped using a smuggled .45-caliber pistol which they used in overpowering the guards. — Dan Toribio Jr. With report from Al Jacinto
