Congressman Celso Lobregat of District 1 together with personnel from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) spearheaded yesterday the distribution of cash assistance to Campo Islam fire victims temporarily housed at the John Spirig Elementary School.

The cash assistance, released by the DSWD regional office upon recommendation and endorsement from Cong. Lobregat, was intended to help the affected families jumpstart rehabilitation efforts.

Lobregat endorsed to the DSWD the grant of the additional assistance to the victims following a visit to the fire site in Campo Islam and the affected families at the evacuation center last Sunday, June 8.

A total of 311 families received financial assistance—221 of whom are house owners, 79 house sharers, 11 house renters and 9 boarders.

House owners received P3,000 each, house sharers and renters got P2,000 each and boarders were given P1,000 each.

“This cash assistance can help them buy the initial materials they need, as they recover from the effects of the calamity that hit them,” said Cong. Lobregat.

Joining the congressman during the distribution rite at the John Spirig Elementary School yesterday were Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde and Councilors Charlie Mariano and Gerky Valesco Jr., Campo Islam barangay chairman Faizal Jamalul and former Councilor Rudy Lim.

Aside from facilitating release of assistance from DSWD, Lobregat also made the same recommendation and endorsement of the list of evacuees to the Philippine Red Cross where he serves as Governor.

Following the request, the Red Cross last Monday also distributed food assistance to the victims.

It is recalled that over 100 houses were razed to the ground during a fire incident that hit Campo Islam June 4. Two persons, including a fire fighter were injured. Damage to properties is estimated to have reached between P3-4 million, according to the local Fire Department. — Joefel de las Peñas
