JOLO, Sulu — Sulu 2nd district Rep. Habib Tupay Loong has allotted P4 million to finance a college  scholarship grant  to poor but deserving students residents of his congressional district effective school year 2011-2012.

Rep. Loong  draws the  fund from his congressional development fund (CDF) aimed at helping poor but deserving students of his district finish a four  year course in college.

“To reduce the high rate in illiteracy in my district, It would be best for me to finance the education of these poor student  to complete their college education,” the Sulu solon said, adding “this scholarship program will also help  parents who want to send their children to college but could not afford due to financial reason.”

He said many parents of  students in  his district are solely dependent on fishing as their source  of living.

“This is the reason why I put up this program to help them the provincial government reduce the rate of illiteracy,” he explained.

Loong said students who are interested to avail of the  program may visit his congressional district office in  Kakuyagan village in  San Raymundo, Jolo.

He said application forms and other requirements can be secure at his office through his liaison officer stationed at the office.

Courses available are Agriculture and  Agricultural Biotechnology; Agricultural Chemistry; Agricultural Engineering; Courses in aquamarine and fisheries; Courses in forestry and Information Technology.
Successful applicants to Congressman Loong’s scholarship grant are entitled to free tuition and  miscellaneous expenses, book allowance and  a monthly stipend for 10 months.

Students who are grantees of other scholarship are disqualified to the Loong scholarship program. — Nonoy E. Lacson
