Deadline for the submission of registration forms and entries for the Concurso de Banda, a band contest organized by the City Government through the City Tourism Division is today, June 18.

Mayor Beng Climaco calls on all interested participants to join the competition which will be held on June 23 at 7pm at Paseo del Mar highlighting the observance of the 3rd Dia de Fundacion de Chabacano marking the day when the chabacano language came into being.

The City Tourism Office at Paseo del Mar will be opened to receive the entries until 5pm today. For other details please call 992-3007.

Mayor Climaco said big prizes await the winners. The champion will receive P10,000; the second prize is P7,000 and third prize is P5,000. Non winners will receive a consolation prize of P2,000.

The contest has objectives: promote chabacano dialect through a musical competition, provide an avenue of exposures for local amateur bands for the enhancement of their talents and to showcase the best amateur bands in the city with their original chabacano compositions.

Registration forms are available at the City Tourism Office at Paseo del Mar. The accomplished registration form and the copy of the original chabacano song composition with lyrics and chords must be submitted to the City Tourism Office on or before June 18, Wednesday.

The competition is open to all male and female band members and only original chabacano songs will be allowed to join as entries for the contest.

Criteria for judging include musicality- 60%, technique and accuracy- 30% and stage presence and audience impact- 10%. There will be 3 judges set for the competition. The decision of the judges will be final and binding to all participants.

The contest is open to all bands with a maximum of 5 members. It is a first come first serve basis registration.

Interested groups must prepare one cover song of their choice followed by their original composition. The cover song must be within the acceptable genre ranging from alternative, R&B, reggae to pop and it should be in chabacano lyrics.

Interested group must prepare and submit an ORIGINAL CHABACANO song composition with lyrics and chords. No hard rock composition will be accepted. The lyrics of the composition must not contain vulgar or obscene or anything derogatory to the local culture and sensitivity and must adhere to the theme “Chabacano: The Official Language of Zamboanga City.” — Sheila Covarrubias
