The City Government in cooperation with implementing partners is pushing gradually but surely the effort to clear schools of internally displaced persons (IDPs) to allow students the full use of the classrooms.

In the last two days, a total of 58 families or 240 individuals from Talon-talon Elementary School transferred to the Masepla, Mampang transitory site bringing the total number of families now housed at the 6th transitory site to over 340.

Of the total 58 families transferred, 14 were moved to Mampang Saturday (June 14) while 44 families were relocated Sunday (June 15).

Mayor Beng Climaco said the City Government is exhausting all efforts to clear all schools used as evacuation centers at present so that students can make full use of the classrooms and ensure quality education.

The IDP movement, initiated by the Temporary Shelter Cluster, is a coordinative effort with the education, protection and security cluster. It also takes place only after the conduct of social preparation and “look-see visits”.

Per record from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), only 3 schools remain as evacuation centers in addition to the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex (JEMSC) and the R.T. Lim Boulevard shoreline, as of June 15.  These include Talon-talon Elementary School with 169 families or 863 individuals; Zamboanga City East Central School with 81 families or 450 individuals and Don Gregorio Elementary Memorial School (GEMS) with 23 families or 132 individuals.

The total number of families remaining in all evacuation centers is 3,264 or 17,298 individuals.

Aside from being used as evacuation centers, various other schools are used as annex for schools affected by the siege. Zamboanga East Central School is also used as the campus for Sta. Barbara Central School; Baliwasan Central School is utilized as campus for Mariki Elementary School.

Annex schools will also be set up in Taluksangay and Tulungatung Elementary Schools where pupils from siege-affected schools are enrolled for school year 2014-2015.
