The city government has set a simple but meaningful celebration marking the 90th birth anniversary of the late Mayor Maria Clara Lobregat’s on April 26 kicking off the 2011 Summer Festival in Zamboanga.

Dubbed as “Dia de Ma’am Caling”, the occasion is based on an ordinance declaring April 26 of every year as a special day in honor of the late mayor who became a delegate to the Constitutional convention in 1970, representative of the city’s lone district from 1989-1998 and first lady mayor of Zamboanga from 1998 until her demise in 2004. This year’s celebration is the fifth (5th) since the ordinance became effective in 2007.

The celebration will start with a commemorative mass at 4pm at the Holy Trinity Parish in Pasonanca followed by a commemorative program and the 1st Maria Clara Lobregat Awards of Excellence at 5pm at the Jardin Maria Clara in Pasonanca.

The Awards of excellence aims to give recognition to top tertiary students from various universities and colleges in the city.

Part of the Dia de Ma’am Caling celebration will be the “Operation Tuli” or free circumcision for young boys from 8am to 5pm at the City Health Office. It is organized by the CHO under Dr. Rodel Agbulos and has bcome a yearly health program during the Ma’am Caling’s birthday.

The inauguration of the R.T. Lim Boulevard sidewalk extension at 3 pm will also highlight the Dia de Ma’am Caling on April 26.

Mayor Celso Lobregat, eldest son and successor of the late Mrs. Lobregat will spearhead the different activities slated for the Dia de Ma’am Caling.

Mrs. Lobregat was born on April 26, 1921. She succumbed to cardiac arrest at a Manila Hospital last January 2, 2004 while she was serving her second term as mayor of the city. Her eldest son, Celso succeeded her following a landslide victory in the May 2004, 2007 and 2010 elections. — Sheila Covarrubias
