The City Government, through the Office of the City Environment and Natural Resources (OCENR), is set to celebrate the Arbor Day na Ciudad de Zamboanga, an initiative which seeks to encourage residents to protect the environment, on Wednesday, June 25.

Spearheaded in cognizance with the Philippine Arbor Day celebration, and City Ordinance 281, the Arbor Day celebration will kick-off with a commemorative program at Cesar Climaco Freedom Park at 7AM.

This will be followed by the tree planting activity, an annual tradition and the highlight of every Arbor Day celebration, at a designated planting site in Abong-Abong.

Meanwhile, the tagging of declared “Century” trees situated at barangays Pasonanca and Sta. Maria will be conducted after the morning tree planting activity.

Expected to participate in the activity are officials from the City Government, local leaders and officials, the academe, and representatives from all sectors and agencies, including private organizations. City Mayor Beng Climaco will be keynoting the event, and City Representatives for Districts 1 and 2, Celso Lobregat and Lilia Nuno, will also be giving their Arbor Day messages.

Aside from tree planting, the program will also feature other activities which aim to enjoin the community to make a personal commitment to protect and conserve trees, and other natural resources.
