All roads lead to the Climaco Freedom Park in Abong-abong, Upper Pasonanca, today, June 25, for the celebration of Arbor Day na Ciudad de Zamboanga, an initiative which seeks to encourage residents to protect the environment.

Participants from the different sectors of the community are expected to turn up for the day-long event that will be capped with a massive tree planting activity.

Mayor Beng Climaco will spearhead Zamboangueños in celebrating Arbor Day together with Congresspersons Celso Lobregat of District I and Lilia Nuño of District II, City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr. and City Environment and Natural Resources Officer Engr. Rey Gonzales.

The activity will kick off 7am with assembly and registration which will be highlighted with the face paint, leaf of hope and the Zambo Arbor Day selfie shots—activities which aim to enjoin the community to make a personal commitment to protect and conserve trees, and other natural resources.

A band performance will set the mood before the commemorative program will start.

The tagging with metal plates of declared “century” trees situated in barangays Pasonanca and Sta. Maria will cap the activity.

The annual Arbor Day celebration is spearheaded by City Government through the City Environment and Natural Resources Office. It is pursuant to Ordinance 281 and is in observance of Philippine Arbor Day on June 25 every year. The ordinance mandates active public participation in tree planting activities. — Sheila Covarrubias
