Zamboangueños at the scenic Paseo del Mar were treated to an evening of original Chabacano songs as local amateur bands gave the performance of a lifetime in a bid to take the top spot during Monday night’s Concurso de Banda.

Each of the twelve participating bands performed their original Chabacano compositions before a huge gathering, demonstrating the talents of the city’s home-grown musicians.

Project 27 wowed the crowd and impressed the judges with their original piece entitled “Viaje”, gaining for themselves bragging rights as the winners of the this year’s installment of the Concurso de Banda as well as P10,000 in cash prize.

Cheeze de Sal’s “Chene Duenyo” and Flashback’s “Chene Pa Manyana” rounded up the circle of winners, bringing home P7,000 and P5,000, respectively.

A consolation prize of P2,000 were likewise given to non-winning groups.

The Concurso de Banda is one of the highlights of the 3rd Dia de Fundacion de Chabacano, a commemoration and celebration of the city’s local language. It seeks to promote the Chabacano language through music as well as support local talents.

By virtue of Ordinance 374, the 23rd of June is officially recognized as the city’s Dia de Fundacion de Chabacano to celebrate the founding and encourage the use of the Chabacano language.
