Thousands joined the celebration of Arbor Day 2014 held at the open stage  of the Cesar C. Climaco Freedom Park at sitio Abong-Abong, Barangay Pasonanca, this city yesterday.

The occasion started with the registration of participants followed by a simple ceremony.

“If you will not do anything today to mitigate climate change, in the near future, therewill be countries suffering from heatwaves and more floodings,” City Administrator Antonio Orendain said in his welcome address before thousands of participants.

City Environment and Natural Resources Officer Engr. Reynaldo Gonzales said his office is targeting a total of seven to ten thousand seedlings from mahogany and other trees to be planted in upper Abong-Abong area.

“As we plant (trees) today, we also ensure continuation of valuable things for our future generation,” Gonzales said.

Mayor Beng Climaco-Salazar inspired the crowd as she led the participants in the community dance followed by the hanging of the leaves of hope.

This was followed by tree planting and the tagging of metal plates of declared “century” trees situated at barangays Pasonanca and Sta. Maria. — Monch L. Follosco
