Muslim consumers are encouraged to avail of the discounted prices of halal food and other products during the Diskwento Ramadan initiated by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Region 9.

“For the first time, and here only in our region, we are holding a diskwento project that is timed before the start of the holy month of Ramadan to afford Muslim consumers and the general public the opportunity to buy halal food products and even other items at discounted prices,” Dr. SittiAmina Jain of the DTI-9 Regional Office said in an interview.

Dr. Jain said that Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, is observed worldwide by devout followers of Islam as a month of fasting - with some exceptions such as those who are ill, travelling, diabetic, pregnant or breastfeeding. Adult Muslims go on fast from dawn to sunset. But they may partake of food, particularly halal food, before sunrise and after sunset.

In Zamboanga City, according to Dr. Jain, the Diskwento Ramadan will be held at Plaza Pershing on June 26-27. The same is true in Dipolog and in Ipil but these are held in-store by the participating department stores. In Pagadian City, the Diskwento Ramadan will be held in-store also but on June 27 only. However, it will conduct another on July 26, in time for the celebration of Eid’lFitr.
