Men of the Zamboanga City Police Office remain on high alert as terrorist groups continue to threaten the city, according to ZCPO officer-in-charge Sr. Supt. Angelito Casimiro.

Casimiro was reacting to a query on the security status of Zamboanga City following President Aquino’s advisory on terror plots in the cities of Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Iligan last week.

“The threats are real. We have been receiving information about bombing threats as early as Valentine’s Day last February and we started with target hardening activities. We are averaging 20 to 25 checkpoints every day,” Supt. Casimiro told the media briefing Tuesday afternoon in City Hall.

He said aside from the checkpoints the police have also engaged the so-called force multipliers, the barangay officials and the community to help tighten Zamboanga City’s security against terrorist attacks.

Casimiro said the tightening of security has resulted in the arrest of four suspected Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) members last week.

“We are thankful for the support of the community for the information that led to the arrest,” he said.

“We have to continue with our vigilance and not to get tired doing of what we have been doing. Kung pwede lang pa-igtingin natin. We will continue to do it because the threats are real at nandoon lang sa tabi natin and we cannot afford to let our guards down because it will be the lives of the people of Zamboanga that are at stake,” Casimiro said.

According to him, the police are looking at a terror group with different sub-groups whose members are young and products of the situation in the region. These are groups that are related either by blood or affinity. However, he did not elaborate.

“We hope we can contain and be able to prevent the atrocities that these groups are planning for Zamboanga City,” he said.— Vic Larato
