The Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) IX, together with the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council IX, will be spearheading a series of activities in the region in line with the celebration of the National Disaster Consciousness Month (NCDM) this July.

With the theme of “Kahandaan at Kaligtasan ng Pamayanan, Pundasyon ng Kaunlaran”, this year’s disaster awareness month celebration will include several capacity building training such as a Water Search and Rescue (WaSAR) training, a Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDANA), and a disaster risk reduction management (DRRM) seminar.

Simulation emergency and earthquake drills will also be conducted in different areas in the region, in a bid to equip students, organizations, and individuals with the knowledge and skills on the proper response during and after disasters.

Additionally, a special convocation will be spearheaded by the Department of Natural Resources (DENR) IX for the NDCM kick off, and a series of roving caravans will visit key cities in the region, courtesy of the Department of Trade and Industry.

With the aim of safeguarding communities from the adverse effects of disasters, the annual NDCM celebration seeks to promote public awareness on natural hazards, and disseminate critical information on measures which can be undertaken to mitigate the adverse effects of such hazards.

In Zamboanga City, the NDCM 2014 officially kicked off Tuesday morning, July 1, with a motorcade and an opening program spearheaded by the OCD IX at the Paseo del Mar. — Jasmine Mohammadsali
