The City Government last Friday started releasing allowances for public elementary and secondary school teachers in the city for the first 6 months of the year that would amount to a total of P38.86 million.

The release covers the period from January to June 2014 for 4,627 teachers. Each teacher is expected to receive P4, 200 which is equivalent to P700 per teacher per month.

Mayor Beng Climaco has directed the offices of the City Accountant, City Treasurer and City Budget to fast track the release subject to compliance of all requirements by the Department of Education- Division of City Schools.

The grant of allowances to public school teachers is one of the continuing assistance and support system initiated by the City Government to help ensure quality education in Zamboanga.

The funds come from the General Fund of the City while some others are taken from the Special Education Fund. Covered in the grant of allowances are teachers under the DEDPED and Local School Board (LSB).

The DEPED- Division office under Pedro Melchor Natividad finalized the submission of the masterlist of teachers Thursday and Friday.

The grant of allowances to teachers started way back in 1995 as one of the city’s assistance to education. It is intended to encourage the teachers to do their job well.

From 1995-2006, the monthly allowance was only P200—this was increased to P300 in 2007 with increased number of teachers. In 2009, the allowance was raised to P500 monthly with increased number of teachers and effective July 2010, the amount surged to P700.  — Sheila Covarrubias
