Beng inspects 2 tornado-hit sitios PDF Print E-mail

Mayor Beng Climaco motored to the east coast on Sunday to check on the situation at Sitio Mangga, Barangay Bolong and sitio Licopon, Barangay Bunguiao which were hit by a tornado or twister Friday afternoon.

Accompanied by City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat, City Social Welfare and Development Coordinator Ma. Socorro Roxas, the team from the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and barangay officials, Mayor Climaco personally visited the areas devastated by the tornado and issued various instructions to ensure early assistance to the affected farmers and families.

The mayor at the same time distributed relief goods and slippers to those displaced by the calamity.

A total of 12 houses – 11 in Bolong and 1 in Bungiao were affected. Of the total 11 houses affected in Bolong, 5 were totally damaged while 6 were partially damaged. No casualties were reported.

City Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat said approximately 2.5 hectares of rice fields were inundated affecting 4 farmers; 400 hills of banana and 5 coconut trees.

The office will extend rice assistance to the affected farmers today, Monday, Palacat said.

The City Social Welfare office on the other hand, is validating the names of the victims for possible cash assistance from the local government, according to Roxas. Emergency relief assistance was provided to those affected right after the report reached the CSWDO.

Also joining the mayor in her visit to the affected site were Bolong barangay chair Antonio Evangelista and Nestor Atilano of Bunguiao.

Tornado or whirlwind which means “ipo-ipo” in the vernacular, is a column of air moving rapidly around and around in a cylindrical or funnel shape.

The city Friday experienced continuous occasional rainshowers with thunderstorms due to inter-tropical convergence zone (ITZC) over Mindanao. — Sheila Covarrubias
