A total of 155 rape cases were recorded by the police from last year to the second quarter of  2014.

Inspector Izel D. Maraviles, chief,  Zamboanga City Police Office’s Women and Children Desk Office, disclosed that in 2013, a total of 109 rape incidents against women and minors were committed  in the city.         Maraviles said 24 cases were filed in court against the  perpetrators,  69  incidents are under investigation and 16 were settled between the perpetrators and the victims.

Statutory rape against minors were committed ranging from ages 5 to 6 years old. There were 12 incidents of plain  rape and 14 incidents on sexual abuse.

From first quarter to second quarter of 2014, there were 46 rape incidents committed against women and minors— Eleven against female of legal age and 35 against minors. Minors victims are  ranging from age of  5 to 8 years old. Nine cases were filed in court, 24  still under investigation and four were settled.

Maraviles disclosed that some victims are hesitant and ashame to file a case against the perpetrators.

She said that victims who are afraid to report to the  police, can come secretly anytime to her office and their  identities will be protected.    “My office will help victims who are ashame and we will do our best to arrest the perpetrators,” Maraviles said. — Allen Abastillas
