Army troops backed by militiamen and policemen have  captured a New People Army (NPA) Amazon-leader following a 15-minute fire fight in the hinterlands of Zamboanga del Norte, a military official announced yesterday.
Army’s 101st Infantry Battalion commander Col. Apolinario Alobba identified the captured NPA Amazon-leader as Mercy Maghinay alias Ka Joycee, 35, secretary of Front Feliciano “B” of the Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee (WMRPC).
Alobba said Maghinay was captured around noon Monday following a 15-minute fire fight at Sitio Guigang, Barangay Guibo, Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte.
Alobba said the fire fight ensued as the troops returned fire when ambushed by the NPA rebels while conducting security patrol.
He said Maghinay was captured after she was abandoned by her comrades who fled to different directions.
He said the troops have recovered from the site of the fire fight a shotgun, a calibre .45 pistol, a hand grenade and P100,000 cash.
He said the NPA rebels that figured in Monday’s clash with the troops were believed responsible in the burning of the P50.3 million construction equipment on November 19, 2013 in Sitio Gusay, Barangay Titik, Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte.
Newly-installed 1st Infantry Division commander Brig. Gen. Gerardo Barrientos, Jr. commended the troops for the accomplishment that saw the capture of Maghinay.
