DOT9 holds Eco Guides, Mountain Guides Training PDF Print E-mail

Department of Tourism-Region 9 (DOT-9) conducted the Eco-Guides/Mountain Guides Training last July 4-10, 2014 at the Provincial Government Center, Dao, Pagadian City. The workshop was designed to train and accredit eco-guides and mountain guides in Zamboanga del Sur, specifically for Mt. Timolan, a tourist destination in the region.

The workshop was attended by 37 participants from the 7 barangays of the municipality of Tigbao, Zamboanga del Sur where Mt. Timolan is located and members of the Pundok sa Aktibong Pagadianong Adbenturero organization of Pagadian City.

The training was formally opened by Dir. Mary June Bugante of DOT9 and Mr. Edward Pintac, Board Member of Zamboanga del Sur.

The 7-day workshop was filled with various non-technical topics such as Gender and Development by Ms. Marilou Silorio of DOT9, Overview of the Philippine Tourism Industry by Mr. Roderick Gonzales of DOT Central Office, History and Culture by Ms. Renefe Tremedal of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Effective Customer Service and Tour Guiding Techniques by Mr. Jaime Barrientos, a DOT accredited speaker for tour guiding accreditation, Childwise Tourism by Mr. Wenceslao Galeza of DOT9, and Sustainable Tourism and Ecology by Ms. Evangeline Estoconing of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Moreover, technical topics discussed were as follows: Flora & Fauna and Bird Watching by Mr. Anthony Arbias and Mr. Adrian Constantino of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines (WBCP); and Introduction to Mountaineering, Basic Caving, Compass & Map Reading, and Wilderness Emergencies & Jungle Survival by Mr. Edwin Aguilar, Mr. Melchor Padilla and Mr. Larry Andres of the Makati City Disaster Risk and Response Management Office. These technical speakers climbed Mt. Timolan before the training to experience mountaineering first-hand. Their lectures were customized to fit the issues and concerns faced by the participants.

DOT 9 will also conduct a similar workshop on cave guiding for Zamboanga del Norte, where Libuton Cave in the municipality of Maukan is located.

Through this training, accredited eco-guides and mountain guides were developed in the region.
