Mayor Celso Lobregat together with Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde and some members of the City Council distributed PhilHealth insurance cards to 3,755 new beneficiaries coming from the different sectors in the city yesterday morning.

Of the total, 2,529 beneficiaries were indigent residents of the different barangays as identified by the City Social Welfare and Development Office, 486 were members of urban poor groups, 250 Rural Improvement Club (RIC) members, 227 former barangay officials, 199 senior citizens, 50 persons with disabilities and 14 Job Order employees of the city government.

Mayor Lobregat said the new PhilHealth enrollees brought to 30,816 the total number of  PhilHealth beneficiaries sponsored by the city government since the program started with only 900 beneficiaries during the time of the late Mayor Maria Clara L. Lobregat.

PhilHealth central office in Manila last year declared Zamboanga City as a “Universal Coverage Area,” in recognition of the city government’s support to the primary insurance program with over 30,000 sponsored-beneficiaries.

“This is a program initiated by Ma’am Caling and we continued it under our administration,” Lobregat said, explaining that yesterday’s distribution of PhilHealth cards was part of the activities lined up for Ma’am Caling’s 90th birthday dubbed “Dia di Ma’am Caling.”

Among the councilors present were Lilia Nuño, Percival Ramos, Rudy Lim, Nonong Guingona, Rey Candido, Mike Alavar and Rogelio Valesco Jr. Also on hand were Lobregat’s brother Jomar, CSWD Officer Francisco Barredo, the officials and staff of PhilHealth Regional Office 9 headed by Venus Giron and Nadzmier Sajili.

The Dia de Ma’am Caling yesterday was also highlighted by the blessing and inauguration of the R.T. Lim Boulevard site development project and operation tuli or free circumcision for young boys at the City Health Office.

The commemorative mass was held at 4pm at the Pasonanca Church and the program capped with the awarding of the Top 5 first Maria Clara Lobregat Award of Excellence was held at 5pm at the Jardin Maria Clara also in Pasonanca. — Vic Larato
