The police chief of Lamitan City, Basilan, was relieved following the series of gun violence the latest of which was the fatal shooting of a kagawad of Barangay Parangbasak yesterday.

Relieved from his post was Chief Insp. Almer Ismael. The commander of the Basilan Provincial Public Safety Batallion Company, Chief Insp. Parson Asadil was designated as officer-in-charge of the Lamitan City police station.

Parangbasak Kagawad Asmarin Halul was driving a Honda XRM motorcycle when a gunman riding on another Honda XRM opened fire on him at Oval Site, Barangay Matibay, Lamitan City around 12:56 p.m. yesterday.

A bullet pierced Halul’s chest and exited at the back. He was rushed to the Torres Hospital where he later expired.

Last July 17, a businesswoman was shot dead by hoduppers at the Lamitan public market.

Killed was Maria Dolores Ramos y Orbuda, a store owner at the said market.

Police said Ramos was about to close her store around 6 p.m. when gunmen appeared and ordered her to hand  over her day’s earnings. However Ramos refused to do so prompting the holduppers to shoot her.

Police investigators said that robbery was the apparent motive behind the incident as the killers fled with Ramos’s undetermined amount of money as well as her cell phone. — Richard Falcatan
