All roads lead to Ping’s Court in Talon-Talon today for the opening of the Zamboanga Basketball Tournament (ZBT) Talon-Talon leg.

According to ZBT organizer Junie Navarro, the ZBT goes to Talon-Talon this year after staging two successful conferences last year at Golden Boys Court in Nuñez Extension.

He said the tournament is being held in the said barangay in honor of the Feast of the Lady of Fatima which falls on May 13.

Navarro said the much-awaited basketball tournament will start at 2 p.m. today where the first game will be played between Talon-Talon SK and Kings Manpower.

Participating teams are FAOCFOC of Mayor Jikiri, Farah J of Jun Jailani, ZBL of Nash Ismula, Kings Manpower of Junie Navarro, Nailah of Muhamad Sali, among others.

“We guarantee hard ball actions and exciting games to our fans and basketball aficionados throughout the tournament,” Navarro told reporters in an interview.

He added the barangay of Talon-Talon is noted for producing prominent local basketball stars like Fhadzmir Toto Bandaying, Wang Alvarez, Jason Rebollos and many others who have already played in national leagues.

“We hope that being consistent in the promotion of basketball we can discover and produce more local talents that will bring honor to the city,” Navarro stressed.

He said that promoting sports like holding basketball leagues in the barangay level is one way of developing our youth especially during this time of summer.

“Instead of being hooked in vices, our youth should be much more involved in various sports like Basketball, and that is why we are always promoting sports here in our city,” Navarro, who also saw action in national basketball leagues like Liga ng Pilipinas, stressed.

The ZBT was first organized by the late Rolando “Lando” Navarro, a noted sportsman in the city, who has been instrumental in the promotion and development not only of basketball but also softball.

Following his footstep, his son Junie, has also committed himself in the promotion of sports particularly basketball here in the city and other parts of the country. — Jemuel E. Mojica
