Zamboangueños from all walks of life converged at the Jardin Maria Clara at Pasonanca Park to pay tribute to the city’s most loved Mayor Maria Clara Lorenzo Lobregat on the occasion of her 90th birth anniversary dubbed “Dia de Ma’am Caling”.

The awarding of the Top Five 1st Maria Clara L. Lobregat Awards of Excellence was the main highlight of the commemoration. Other activities during the day included the distribution of PHILHEALTH insurance cards to 3,775 indigent families, free circumcision for young boys dubbed “Operation Tuli” at the City Health Office, inauguration and blessing of the P8.6 million R.T. Lim Boulevard expansion project and a commemorative mass at the Pasonanca church.

Mayor Celso Lobregat and Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde led city officials and representatives from different sectors including the Lobregat siblings Joemar and Ditas and their respective families in the activities for Ma’am Caling’s birthday celebration which was pursuant to Ordinance 178 enacted in April 2006. House Deputy Speaker Beng Climaco’s representative Mike Saavedra joined the mayor at the R.T. Lim Boulevard project inauguration while District II Cong. Erbie A. Fabian joined in the commemorative mass celebrated by Msgr. Cris Manongas and parish priest Fr. Fred Alavado.

Prior to the program at the Jardin, the 3rd Air Division of the Philippine Air Force surprised the crowd with the floral drop showering the entire Jardin Maria Clara with a confetti of flowers.

Mayor Lobregat, in his message during the program at the Jardin said his administration is ardently pursuing the missions and visions of his mother Ma’am Caling as he cited numerous ongoing projects and programs of the city government. All these projects and programs, he said are intended to benefit the constituents and are in line with the City Development Strategy.

“In the first three years of our term, we said much has been done; in our second term we said much more will be done and in our third term we say the best is yet to come and the best is already coming”, the mayor stressed.

The awardees in the first Maria Clara L. Lobregat Awards for Excellence (MCLLAE) were Adrian S. Uro of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Arthur S. Batica of the Southern City Colleges, Emrant M. Chua of the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology, George F. Diesanta of AMA Computer University and Sarah J. Taradji of the Western Mindanao State University.

The MCLL Awards of Excellence is meant to continue Ma’am Caling’s legacy for the youth. In her lifetime, Mrs. Lobregat was so concerned of the students and the youth, proof of which was the scholarship program under the COCOFED. Most if not all of her COCOFED scholars are now gainfully employed and in fact occupying high positions either in government or the private sector.

Also attending the celebration were city government employees headed by the department heads, City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr., City Hall Chief Executive Assistant Mario Roca, Councilors Nonong Guingona, Rudy Lim, Abdurahman Nuño, Lilia Nuño, Myra Abubakar, Joana Mas, Mike Alavar, Percival Ramos, Rey Candido, Noning Biel, VP Elago,  Rogelio Valesco Jr., City Police OIC director Col. Edwin de Ocampo, Task Force Zamboanga Commander Col. Buenaventura Pascual, barangay officials, school officials, business and religious sectors, military and police officers as well as the family friends of the Lobregats. — Sheila Covarrubias
