A total of P63 billion or 30 percent of the proposed 2015 budget of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will be allocated to improve the road networks in Mindanao.
According to DPWH Secretary Rogelio Singson, the fund will be used for the construction of new roads and improvement works in the southern part of the country to help boost tourism and the transport of goods to and from that region.
“The entire amount that would be allocated for Mindanao is P63 billion, that is 30 percent of our budget (for year 2015),” he said in a telephone interview.
Singson said the P63-billion fund would be distributed among different Mindanao provinces for the road projects that would connect seaports, airports and the production areas in the region, which has one of the lowest road density in the country in terms of kilometers of concrete roads.
The DPWH head added that they would be working on roadways that are needed to implement the master plan of the Department of Tourism (DOT) in the region.
Meanwhile, Singson expressed gratitude to President Benigno S. Aquino III for acknowledging the efforts of the department in curbing corruption during the latter’s State- of-the-Nation Address (SONA) on Monday.
He noted that it is not only him that should be acknowledged but also the employees of the agency for responding to the call for reforms.
