Ferndale opens defense with rout, Wildcats top Eagles PDF Print E-mail

Defending boys and men’s division champions Ferndale International School battered Southern City Colleges B to open its defense of the boys crown on a high note even as Universidad de Zamboanga hung one over fancied Ateneo Saturday atas the 10th Inter-school Basketball tourney got going with a heavy 6-game offering  the Mayor Vitaliano Agan Memorial gymnasium in Tetuan.

In the tournament sponsored by the Federacion Basketbolista de Zamboanga (FBZ),  in coordination with the Samahang Basketbolistang Pilipinas (SBP) ,Ferndale served notice its title conquest last year was no fluke as it toyed with Southern City Colleges Team B  83-53 in game one while the green-shirted Wildcats of UZ former ZAEC rolled past Ateneo 76-62 in the last game of the day.

The 10th offering of the inter-school hoopfest scored a record of sorts as it drew a record 29 teams from the different participating schools bunched in three category levels namely Boys Division, Men’s Division and for the first time a Girls/Women’s division too.

In a short opening program, the organizers headed by FBZ President and SBP Area Head Pedro Alfaro Jr., SBP Regional head Atty, Manuel Mamauag and SBP Trustee Edgar Galea, expressed their gratitude to the schools for their continued faith ON the leadership of FBZ by their unstinting support for the league that traced its humble start in 2004.

Galea gave a short inspiration message while Alfaro declared the games open. Atty. Mamauag oversaw the Miss FBZ and Miss Interschool Tourney Muse competition which saw contestants from Claret and Pilar Colleges bag the beauty crowns.

In other Game results Saturday, Pilar College clobbered WMSU 66-55, while Southern Team A bamboozled Claret Team B 122-31 in the Boys bracket.

In the other men’s competition results, Pilar College defeated Southern Team C 61-49 while WMSU edged out Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology 83-80.

The following day Sunday Zion Evangelical scored a 62-47 win over Zambo. City High Main ,Claret School Team A walloped Southern City Colleges Team B  96-69, while Claret Team B got flattened out by Ateneo 42-107 in the Boys Category action as Southern City Colleges Team B scored a 74-53 win over Pilar College, Ateneo edged out WMSU 67-65 and the Dolphins of Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology trounced Southern City Colleges 103-76.

Tourney chair and Technical committee head Joel Quintanes announced games will be played weekends at the Mayor Agan Gymnasium.
