To highlight commemoration of World Humanitarian Day (WHD) 2014, five humanitarian heroes of Zamboanga will be named on August 19 in fitting ceremonies to be organized by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA)-Zamboanga Hub.

Intended to celebrate the spirit of people helping people that inspires all humanitarian work, the World Humanitarian Day is a global event that commemorates the day in 2003 when UN headquarters in Baghdad was bombed and 22 people were killed.

The OCHA-Zamboanga Hub in partnership with the Mindanao Humanitarian Team (MHT) has tapped the assistance of 3 universities in the city- Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Universidad de Zamboanga and Western Mindanao State University-whose students leader are enjoined to submit nominations for Zamboangueño humanitarian heroes.  WHD orientation for the Student Councils was done July 20.

The deadline for the submission of the accomplished humanitarian hero forms is today, August 12, 2014.

The nominees could be anybody who performed humanitarian work based on 4 basic humanitarian principles: humanity, neutrality, independence and impartiality. The form contains two main questions: Why did you choose this person as your humanitarian hero and please give 3 examples of the things the person has done which you think make him/her a humanitarian hero.

The nomination forms will evaluated and deliberated on August 13 at the OCHA-Zamboanga Hub at the Badjao Room, Garden Orchid Hotel by a panel composed of representatives from OCHA, United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF), United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), International Office for Migration (IOM), Community and Family Services International (CFSI) and Action Against Hunger (ACF) International.

To add significance to the WHD 2014 commemoration in Zamboanga, OCHA-Zamboanga Hub will also be installing photo booths starting August 9 at the 3 concerned universities where students can pose in line with the Messengers of Humanity campaign. These photos with the students’ thoughts regarding humanitarian work and humanitarian heroes can be shared through the social media using #HUMANITARIAN HEROES to help drum up awareness on the campaign.
