Some 200 houses on stilts for Sama de Laut families will rise in the shorelines of sitio Buggoc in barangay Kasanyangan through a program dubbed Buggoc Challenge, a bayanihan build concept initiated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in partnership with the City Government.

The project will have its groundbreaking ceremony today, kicking off the start of the construction of single detached housing units that are culturally sensitive and disaster-resilient. The houses will be the temporary shelters for the 200 identified Sama de Laut families now housed at the R.T. Lim Boulevard.

The Buggoc Challenge involves the stakeholders- government agencies, non-government organizations, private groups and individuals who can provide manual, moral and financial support for the construction of the temporary shelters.

Since its launching last August 6 at the City Hall conference room, various groups and individuals have responded to the call for the bayanihan spirit. They include Dr. Mila Fernandez, Dennis Hardware Enterprises, City Human Resource and Management Office, City Health Office, Zamboanga Puericulture Center Hospital, Crisanto de la Cruz, Office of the City Administrator, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, City Planning and Development Office, City Mayor’s Office, Southern City Colleges, Beta Sigma Fraternity and numerous others.

Under the Buggoc Challenge concept, the IOM will provide the housing materials for the 200 housing units on stilts while the build partners/ donors will assist by providing the labor component estimated at P10,000 per unit.

The amount will be used to pay at least 5 laborers who will work on each unit for a period of 7 days at a daily cost of P280.

Philippine Council for Sama and Bajau President Datu Hadji Hussayin Arpa has expressed gratitude to all the partners and most especially to the IOM and the local government for looking after the welfare of the Sama de Laut families, whose only means of living is through the sea.

The ground breaking ceremony at the site in Buggoc in Kasanyangan today will be highlighted by the ceremonial build by the partners or donors and spearheaded by Mayor Beng Climaco. — Sheila Covarrubias
