WMSU opens defense in SBP Division with win over Zion PDF Print E-mail

Western Mindanao State University opened defense of its crown in the SBP category last Saturday as the 21-team Best Center Twin Basketball Tournament got underway at the Mayor Vitaliano Agan Memorial Coliseum in Tetuan.

The SBP defending champs Crimson, donning the light colored jerseys ran roughshod over a hapless Zion School Five to carve out a lopsided 64-11 win in Division A action.

In another SBP encounter Saturday this time in Division B,  Bethany School followed suit with a similar rout over Saint Joseph School  34-12.

In Passerelle Division action, Bethany seconded their younger peers with a 73-29 win over J-Jireh School in Division A while Zamboanga City High School Main edged out Claret School B 67-62.

The Best Center tourney is the culmination of the previous summer’s Best Center clinics conducted where participants were afforded a chance to showcase what they learned in a formal tourney.

Best Center Franchise holder and SBP Area Head/Trustee Pedro Alfaro Jr. formally opened the tourney earlier with guest Acting City Schools Superintendent Pedro Melchor Natividad giving an inspirational message.

Miss Mariah Bailio of Claret School was adjudged Miss SBP while Ferndale’s Maria Eden Cabañes was picked Miss Passerelle 2014 during the short opening program.

Meanwhile later in the day the distaff side action in the ongoing FBZ tourney got going as Zamboanga City High School Main defeated the girls team of Universidad de Zamboanga 49-38 while in the main game of the day in the men’s division the UZ five defeated Southern City Colleges B team 76-67.

Sunday, the day after saw UZ girls squad rebound with a victory over Claret School , ZCHS Main downed Claret B 53-42 and  Zion scored a 92-39 win over J Jireh in Boys Division B action as UZ thrashed Southern C 86-47,  Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology Dolphins roared past Southern Team B 68-62 and in the nightcap action WMSU scored an upset by tripping Southern Team A  77-61 all in the FBZ Inter School tourney. --- Ed D.
