PAGADIAN CITY - Time flies. Three years after its maiden issue on August 15, 2011, One Mindanao e-magazine continues to serve its online readers with news and information about the events taking place in various parts of Mindanao and the country as well.

Coming up with an e-magazine all started with the advent of online media that the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) has to catch up and blend with to give better services to the people.

Using the email, former PIA-Basilan Information Center Manager Felipo David G. Malcampo used to stay up late in the night to wait for news releases uploaded by the then Office of the Press Secretary that he would email to all his contacts who were mostly PIA employees and members of the Mindanao Communicators Network (MCN). Malcampo is now the information center manager of PIA-Zamboanga City-Basilan-Sulu-Tawi-Tawi (ZBST) cluster.

Malcampo’s initiative had led to the idea of putting up an e-magazine barely more than a year President Benigno S. Aquino assumed the presidency. President Aquino also changed the name of the Office of the Press Secretary to Presidential Communications and Operations Office (PCOO) to which PIA belongs.

Support to One Mindanao e-magazine

No one among the five PIA regional directors of Mindanao objected to the plan of coming out with a daily e-magazine that would publish news and feature stories produced by PIA writers. The magazine reserves a space/section for each region to accommodate its stories.

With PIA-CARAGA Regional Director Abner Caga taking the lead, One Mindanao e-magazine had its maiden issue on August 15, 2011. And until today, the magazine’s final layout is being done daily by PIA-CARAGA region.

Growing subscribers

One Mindanao is now being followed by thousands of subscribers not only those from the island, but also those from other parts of the country and the globe.

A subscriber said he enjoyed reading the magazine as it carries stories from all over Mindanao, making her updated and posted on the things happening from other parts of the island.

Many subscribers say they enjoy reading the magazine not only because of its contents but for its colorful layout as well.

Inter-cultural understanding

One Mindanao came into being for a noble purpose: to promote inter-cultural understanding among the peoples of the island. “Featuring Mindanao’s places, peoples and cultures in the magazine in a way promotes cultural understanding that would lead to peace and progress,” said PIA-9 Regional Director Noemi B. Edaga.

Although a few places of Mindanao are faced with peace and order issues, the people here are one in their quest for lasting peace, and One Mindanao is completely supporting it.

With Director Efren Elbanbuena of PIA-11, Director Abner Caga of PIA-CARAGA, Director Noemi B. Edaga of PIA-9 and Director Olivia Sudaria steering the Mindanao team, One Mindanao magazine will continue to sail on. — FPG/PIA9
